Very unlikeable pairings

I found it very hard to believe the romance between either Kitty and Bill or Bob. There never seemed to be any chemistry there, and both suitors seemed to be unlikeable men. Bill was a workaholic with a short fuse and Bob was a womanizer who absolutely had to have things his way. Kitty had to choose between and man who kept standing her up and a man that made her get out of the car and walk home because she wouldn't put on a dress that wouldn't embarrass him. It's hard to root for a romance when those are the options.

I'm watching this movie now, and I totally agree. It's like she has to choose between the lesser of two evils, with neither of them as a real keeper.

What's interesting, though, is to watch Neil Hamilton as Bob, years before he was Commissioner Gordon on Batman.

Me three. I agree neither suitor was appealing but then I didn't think Ann Sothern was all that charming either. And the change in the characters to good guys on the last reels just didn't ring true although Paul Kelly's character was actually more sympathetic.

I think Bill should get more slack.. It is during depression where her daddy has zero job where mom and dad both have to beg for a dollar. He gets a chance to make $10 for a couple hour job whereas daddy is overwhelmed when offered $15 a week.

Sorry but when times are tough - making money is way more important that a stupid birthday celebration

I agree with you about Bill being ultimately a good guy, the trouble is the movie set him up as a loudmouth braggart which was a hard characterization to live down in the later reels. I was surprised though that the movie makes Neil Hamilton the ultimate victor given the mentality of most 30's movies that noble poor men should win out over somewhat good rich men, that's kind of a cliche' but ironically Blind Date proves it's a more satisfying ending given the Sothern/Hamilton coupling doesn't ring true.
