previously a show?

Though I have seen it many times since I was a kid, I just watched this great film for the first time in many years. To me it has all the elements of a film adaptation of a stage show -- orchestrated throughout, original tunes, several key stage sets. The whole thing has the flavor of a live musical/comedy show. Can anyone tell me whether it was in fact originally a show, and if it was, provide any information about it?

" Babes and Toyland" was an operetta written by Victor Herbert in 1903. It was originally developed to be performed on the stage, and it was developed into this movie in 1934.

Disney redid it in 1961, and it was re-done again in the 1980s starring Drew Barrymore and made for TV. I personally love the Laurel and Hardy version because of how theatrical it is. Its worth watching the Disney one too because of the soundtrack and the dancing.
