Babbitt needs a remake

Gayle and I watched this on TCM and I could not get over how dissimilar this movie was to the book. She explained that this was the early sound era and the execs probably thought they had a built in audience because of the book but also thought that approaching this as a comedy with a happy ending would sell more tickets. A comedy? Oh man. I am sure that Babbitt has some themes that could be translated into the modern era and I would like to see it in a modern movie.
Alexander Payne could direct.

'Let's eat Grandma!' or, 'Let's eat, Grandma!' Punctuation saves lives. Use it. Save a life.
