did this inspire truffaut to make 400 blows?

i know truffaut based that movie on his own life, but he must have seen this film.. so perfect. i didn't realize how instrumental vigo was in setting the foundation for the new wave ..

reply

Yeah, truffaut saw this film. He has been very influenced by it before making "Les Quatre cent coups". Very good film.

I came to this board to say the same. It really reminded me of 400 Blows.
It also reminded me of Pink Floyd the Wall (the film).

Well being a great martyr figure and an anarchist who made films entirely out of his soul and for being a director with a strong visual sense of poetic realism, he is an inescapable influence on la Nouvelle Vague.

But Vigo's influence is far wider than that. Boris Kaufmann who worked with Vigo to create some of the most beautiful work on Black and White became a sought after DP because of his work here. He later shot On the Waterfront and won an Oscar for that. And then Vigo had a big influence on British cinema especially on Lindsay Anderson.

It reminded me of 400 blows too, I should see that movie again.

reply

And it undoubtedly influenced Louis Malle when he made Au Revoir Les Enfants

reply

Did Au Revoir Les Enfants have the line 'I can't keep feeding the boys beans'?

I believe it's the first time I've seen Zero for Conduct, but I could swear that I'd heard that line before.

I agree that Zero for Conduct influenced 400 Blows, Au Revoir les Enfants, and, of course, If.....

reply

Moreover, it influenced Lindsay Anderson's classic IF...

Look at the two films back to back and the similarities are striking.

reply

I'll just say that I love 400 blows so so much. It was a joy to see Zero for Conduct, which obviously was a huge influence on M. Truffaut.

reply

Truffaut wrote the foreward to the American book THE GREAT FRENCH FILMS (part of the Citadel Press "films of" series) and his essay is wonderful, especially in explaining why it is so hard to see many vintage French films even in France. He also calls Vigo the greatest French director of all.
