Who is the Little Black Actress?

Does anyone know the young African-American girl who played the radio fan Claudette Colbert comes to visit? She's adorable! That scene is so beautifully played, such warmth and humor. I think it may be the best scene in this excellent film.

Yes, the little girl Sally was as cute as a button. You could tell Claudette Colbert had genuine affection for the child. That's partly what made the scene so enjoyable. I was cracking up when she tried to get her skinny little legs around the bench to eat her big box of chocolate.

Unfortunately, she was a typical 1930s child actor, obviously coached by someone just off screen.

Watching the scene with 2011 eyes, I was cringing that there was no adult supervising the girl and she accepted candy from a stranger. But I can suspend belief for a few minutes.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Yes, Claudette was always so sensational interacting with children in film, she was such a warm, lovely actress.

Re "suspending belief" I loved the fact that they let this child appear on screen in a beautiful fancy dress and her hair nicely done, looking like she was about to attend a birthday party even though the character was surprised by Colbert's visit and clearly dirt-poor, living in a home that looked like a shack outside of a junkyard. It was a very touching moment of kindness from the director and no doubt Colbert letting this little girl for her (probably) one film appearance look so nice even though it was out of character.
