reputation of the torch singer

Was anyone else surprised to see torch singers portrayed so negatively? I had thought it was considered a reasonable profession. I remember a Fantasy Island episode where that was the fantasy, be a torch singer in the 1920s. But in this movie it seems one step away from being a hooker. Lo how times have changed I guess.

I think it's because torch singers mainly worked in nightclubs which had a reputation as "dens of iniquity" among the more conservative general public which also felt "nice girls" wouldn't work in places like that. I remember hearing that it was hard for female singers to travel in that era because they were thought to have bad reputations, being on the road traveling with a bunch of men.
