fun pre-code enforcement M Loy

This is the 1932 pre-code-enforced Topaze (not the Topaz spy thriller by Hitchcock). In this one, they remind us several times that it was still ok to show or discuss naughtiness on the screen. Note the relationship by Barrymore and Loy right from the start of the film; also scope out the marquee over the movie theater when they go to the movies. They even show Baron LaTour LaTour and his wife sharing a bed! Sure, they spend WAAAY too much time in the classroom near the beginning, showing just how honest and ethical Mr. Topaze is (although he may not stay so for long....) In just two years, Myrna Loy would become the classy Mrs. Nick Charles in the Thin Man series, a much more prim & proper role.

I loved the closing gag, when Barrymore and Loy enter the cinema, under a marquee proclaiming: MAN, WOMAN AND SIN -- Twice Daily!

There really was a movie by that name, a John Gilbert vehicle from 1927. But the Twice Daily! capper was a punchline worthy of Tex Avery.
