Miriam Hopkins...

...was really great in this movie. With very little overacting, and a lot of genuineness. They had a certain style of acting in the early sound years, often filled with heavy histrionic leftovers from the silent era, so I am always very pleasantly surprised when I discover something as smooth as Hopkins' portrayal of Temple Drake... But actually the whole movie was very interestingly played, directed and scripted, almost everything looked very human and believable (except maybe for the ethical and dramatic excesses in the end). The Story of Temple Drake was, as a whole, quite an unexpected thing - but the major responsible for this was its main heroine.

Words, Mr. Sullivan, are precious things. And they are not to be tempered with!

Jack La Rue was pretty good too. Sad that he never got the fame he deserved...

Pretty good; I think La Rue was excellent! He had the perfect look; without saying a word or being shown actually attacking Temple we could tell he was a mean, ruthless person who was capable of everything he did.

La Rue was definitely typecast. In most of the movies I remember seeing him, he played a thug, bad guy, or criminal. He may not have found fame, per se, but he seemed to have made a lot of movies. With his distinct looks, he probably had some level of recognition in his time. I watch a lot of old movies and see him often.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
