Racist stereotypes in Son of Kong

Seen anew on TCM today Kinko is made to do the whole "Step-n-Fetchit" range of business used by negro actors of the period. The rolling eyes, the head scratch, even the peeping around the rocks at the couple in front of the fire, cuddling, he does the finger to mouth, raised eye brows (unibrow?)and bowing back out of sight.

I realize they were different times but this stuff certainly sticks out today.

Come on lads, bags of swank!

Sounds more like childish behavior to me, not black stereotype. What color was Kinko anyway?

reply

Supposed to be albino but they gave him dark eyes.

No, not "childish" in my opinion, if you saw it you might agree.

I think that trying to connect little Kong's cute antics with racist stereotypes is stretching it.

reply

Of course. We only see them with modern eyes, I'm sure that the writers, director and even the SFX guys that operated Little Kong didn't plan some underhand piece of racial discrimination.
But in 1933 black actors with almost no exception had to fit into the stereotypes that Hollywood assigned them which was servants, shoe shine "boys", Pullman attendants, all with limited education and "Amos & Andy" style speech patterns and Little Kong was presented in that context....

Little Kong was presented with limited education and "Amos & Andy" style speech patterns? I must've missed that part.

reply

Please read the quote you display CAREFULLY.

I say that BLACK ACTORS HAD TO FIT THAT STEREOTYPE and that Little Kong was PRESENTED in that context..

Come on lads, bags of swank!

reply

Right. You meant for one thing to lead to the other, and it doesn't. Because there's no valid basis for such a comparison.

reply

Really?
And what is the basis for your claim ?

Come on lads, bags of swank!

reply

I'm not the one making spurious claims with no basis.

reply

Then you show a limited knowledge of American social and racial history in motion pictures.

I'm sorry you feel the need to be in denial of the regular denigration of black Americans in so many movies from the 1900's up until the 1960's.

I recommend the following:

"Black Hollywood" by Kimberley Fain

"Bright Boulevards" by Donald Bogle

You're welcome.

reply

I recommend watching SON OF KONG again and realizing how totally irrelevant any of this is to that particular film.

YOU'RE welcome.

reply

I see denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Come on lads, bags of swank!

reply

Well, at least you admit it.

reply

I realize I must have embarrassed you suggesting you READ something more than flyers from the KKK and White Power Movement.

Come on lads, bags of swank!

reply

Well, you know how horrible us SON OF KONG fans are compared to the usual social justice warrior.

reply

Always bringing it to that when someone disagrees, huh? 😏

reply

All stereotypes are founded in reality. Blacks were more likely to do those sort of jobs then.

reply

Which is still totally irrelevant to SON OF KONG.

Stretching it to the point that there are cracks wider than the Grand Canyon, LOL!

reply

Are you sure your not talking about ape stereotypes?

reply

You back again Rastus the Race Baiter? Do you ever watch movies or do only screen for skin color? You must lead a very humdrum existence. And your probably a guilt ridden white poofer too.
