Ham warning !

Not having seen the movie for several years it was a nasty shock to be reminded of John Marston's playing of Helstrom.
He clearly subscribed to the John Barrymore School of Ham Overacting.
The clenched teeth, the darting eyes, the head thrown back for emphasis totally unbalanced the tenor of the movie. Even the stereotype Chinese cook gave a better performance.

To make up for that, Helen Mack was pretty hot !!

Come on lads, bags of swank!

Agreed. Marston totally overplayed the part of Helstrom. He was so hammy that I wanted to stick a clove in him.

Helen Mack was hot indeed. I agree about Marston but for one thing: the actor triumphed in causing me to despise the character he was playing, thus in this sense his work was wholly successful, as I was eagerly awaiting his demise, and wanted to applause when he departed.
