The antithesis of 'show don't tell'.

It is something of a contemporary writing mantra that it is better to show an audience something than to tell them thru the characters. Well this movie is an example of how not to do that. Almost the entire story is conveyed by one character relating something to another.

Does it work? Imo, no.

The story is also doomed by being hopelessly maudlin, even one suspects, by the standards of the day.

There are some interesting things happening in this movie, such as the switches from dream to reality and to recollection; but the execution is so hamfisted it comes across as comical. Worth watching for the attempt to do something different, but no one involved was competent enough to pull it off- and that starts with the writing.
