Is There A Real Story Here

Is it me but it seems like the movie is a vehicle for a bunch of one-liners and very short on plot.

You're right! This is the worst black and white movie I have ever seen.

There is just a bare bones story to serve as a vehicle for Mae West to promenade about the set and deliver her zingers. Still, I liked it. A lot of Rodney Dangerfield's movies were also just vehicles for him to deliver one liners, and they were very funny. Mae West did not act, she just was "Mae West". Every line was pronounced like she was waiting for a response from the audience. I still found it very entertaining, and more fun than a lot of popular movies today.

You and me, both, Michigan. I loved and was mesmerized by every moment. Thank God for some sanity on this board.

It isn't just you and I wonder why this film was nominated for Best Picture. There isn't much of a story and Mae isn't much of an actress. She plays the same character in each one of her films (that I've seen) and there is nothing outstanding about this film.

reply

I don't think so, I could barely work out what was going on the whole time...

That is a masterpiece of understatement.

OK, I've gotta chime in here.

No offense, but I disagree with the negative opinions on this film, I've seen it 10 times and I never get tired of it. It's not Citizen Kane, nor is it trying to be in any way whatsoever. It's a vehicle for Mae West, and in that capacity it succeeds with gusto.

To say you personally didn't enjoy the film, that is your right. But to bash the film as having nothing of value or to say it's the worst film ever made is simply inaccurate. This film is a piece of history, and has been recognized as such by the highest authorities in the industry.

Is it entertaining? ABSOLUTELY. The songs are fantastic, and it was great fun to watch Mae West slink around in her trademark style delivering an endless string of one-liners.

Apparently the movie-going public of 1933 agreed wholeheartedly. The film was an *enormous* hit, and theaters were pressed to add additional scheduling to accommodate the demand. This film and I'm No Angel were directly responsible for saving Paramount Pictures from folding. (As a Star Trek fan I appreciate this!)

Sure, it's tame by today's standards...but in 1933 it set the screen on fire. I'd love to see an uncensored version of Diamond Lil.

From Wiki:
In 1996, She Done Him Wrong was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

10x? Wow.

I don't think the film is garbage or something, but did sort of wonder what was so exciting about Mae West. To be blunt, she looks pudgy and not very attractive here. This is no disrespect to pudgy -- all sorts of people, including pudgy can be attractive. Ditto that she was around 40 by this time. That's around my age & lots of women my age are sexy. She simply didn't do much for me.

I have seen a few movies from that era -- 1933 or so was when the production code kicked in. So, there were some risque films available around that time. Even on that level, Mae West seems not all that. Maybe, you had to be there & her stage performances were better. The "come up and see me sometime" wind up doll in the cartoons that is a take off of her do more for me.

Guess it's a classic film from that era but having seen it, can see why some would wonder what all the fuss was about. Other films of that era are a lot more entertaining, including to see "female fatales."

10x....yeah, give or take a time or two. I'm in my mid-50s, and in the last 35 years I've seen it quite a few times. It's a pretty short run time and I find it very watchable.

In relation to Mae West, some of the closeups show her age clearly. And I won't deny I'm a bit mystified myself as to why she became *so* popular. It's not as if there weren't other sexy actresses around.

The only thing I can think of is that it was "lightning in a bottle". She came along at the right time and had the right combination of qualities that resulted in massive success...brassy personality, extremely confident, tons of sexual innuendo, and a trademarked style of walking and talking that registered with audiences in a huge way.

And I'll agree that she's not my type as well...so I can't say I like the film because I find her attractive. It's all in her delivery. Speaking for myself, she's fun to watch.

Hear, Hear, ben-thayer. Another sane voice on this board. I was mesmerized by every moment and don't blame you for watching it so many times. It was my FIRST viewing and I'm sorry i missed it for such a long time.
