Portrait of Philip IV by Velazquez

That portrait is funny for two reasons:
Philip IV is funny-looking, with his fat lower lip;
his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, Juan Carlos I, looks exactly like him, except that his lower lip is not so fat.

Philip IV was famous for the deformed upper lip, which was a result of in-breeding.

I've never noticed Juan Carlos to look just like him. lol.

Being historical people it's easy to see what they really looked like. He was no prize but neither was she. Luckily for the royals, their looks didn't matter. They didn't have to attract their mates. Their marriages were pretty much arranged with other royals. Even if that wasn't the case they would have had plenty of takers due to their title and possessions.

I love that scene in the movie. "Does he really look like that? Yes, I suppose he does."

A daughter of Philip IV married Louis XIV; their grandson was Philip V, founder of the Spanish branch of the Bourbons.
