Howard Hawks?

I'm curious to hear from anyone who has any information about Howard Hawks' involvement with this film and/or about any issues involving its direction... I saw The Prizefighter and the Lady a few weeks ago, and I found it curious that there is *no* credited director at all -- not even W.S. Van Dyke, who is listed only as the film's producer.

I recently watched this on TCM, with an introduction by Ben Mankiewicz, and he said Hawks was slated to direct it when it was "The Sailor and the Lady," slated to star Clark Gable and Myrna Loy. Gable was tied up on another film and MGM didn't want to wait, so they changed the sailor to an athlete. Hawks pulled out, and Van Dyke - who loved working with Myrna Loy and predicted she was going to become a big star - stepped in.

In that case I wonder why he's listed as 'uncredited' at all. He didn't really direct any of it.
