Is This the Inspiration for CARRY ON HENRY VIII?

Who can take seriously a movie in which you are supposed to sympathise with a good honest patriotic executioner who is not allowed to chop off the head of Anne Boleyn?
Who can take seriously a movie in which the decent and forthright Catherine of Aragon is totally ignored because she is not sleazy as almost all the other women in HVIII's sleazy life?
Who can take seriously a movie in which the Idi Amin of the 16th century is depicted as a cuddly and endearing big teddy bear whose one fault is that he eats too much?
That's it for now; feel free to add as much as you like.

Who cares if the movie isn't "serious", its not a friggen biography.

This movie is seriously good entertainment.

So you agree with me: it IS a very buffoonish opera buffa.

Agreed on all counts, HijodelCid - obviously, this movie was meant to be a satire/comedy from the very beginning, starting with the headers; something akin to, "Catherine of Aragon was a very nice queen, so let's move on to the juicy stuff..." (when I read that, I laughed aloud) Not to mention the king's voracious sexual appetite, his penchant for beautiful women, the various sexual innuendos, etc.

In real life, it's said that Henry 8 mourned Jane Seymour's (Wife #3) death for a long time, considered her his true wife, and was buried next to her. In this movie, he refers to her as stupid, and when he learns of Jane's death during childbirth (in real life, she died a couple days after the birth of their son) he's sad for all of ten seconds, "Poor, sweet Jane - may she rest in peace." Then bursts into a big, merry smile, "Where's the prince?!" That scene alone is a good indication the movie is meant to be a comical satire about a king and his six marriages - well, five....since Catherine was deemed not worthy of portraying.

In fact, it's mentioned in the opening credits about the movie being viewed by an ADULT audience. Unfortunately, I fell asleep during the reign of wife #5, and woke up at the end, when Henry is getting nagged by Wife #6. I really need to watch it again during daylight hours, and not 3 AM.

the film concentrates mainly on Henry's fourth and fifth wives. It is quite interesting really, because most films about Henry tend to concentrate more on the catherine of Aragon/Anne Boleyn drama. So I think this is actually quite an interesting change. I don't think you could categorise janes eymour, anne of Cleves or catherine Parr as sleazy. maybe catherine Howard. The film does portray Henry as much more benign than he was in real life, but it is enjoyable all the same. I don't think it's really meant to be taken seriously.

HVIII raised all sorts of turmoil for the sole purpose of perpetuating the dynasty started by his father. All three of his children died without issue, so all that toil and trouble was for naught.
