Lots of reasons not to like this - Spoiler Alert
This is one crazy, strange plot for a movie but, go figure, I love it. It's kind of all over the place. First Sylvia is trying to get out of scamming companies because, as she claims, she's not really a bad person and doesn't want to scam people.
Next, when she's caught scamming yet another company and is held accountable, who does she blame? Surely it's not herself or her partner or the guy who doesn't let her go or the jury that convicted her or the judge or the warden. Oh no, of course not! She blames the faceless stranger who's just doing his job; going by the book.
She hates him so much she comes up with a scheme that almost leaves her dead. Then she does the most logic thing; she marries him. It's a phony marriage but she lives with him day after day. That makes sense. What better way to get back at someone; torture yourself. That'll teach him to do his job. It's crazy!
After all that, Sylvia and her hapless guy, Joseph, fall in love. What? They fall in love - in part, because of his job. No, I don't like the premise so I really shouldn't like the movie yet I do! A lot of it has to do with the fact I like Mae Clark. I just discovered her in the last few days while TCM's been running her movies. I also like Ralph Bellamy, who, for once, gets the girl.
This movie reminds me of a Barbara Stanwyck movie I saw recently. They're similar in a lot of ways but also very different. That premise made a little more sense but not much more. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name at the moment but it's also worth seeing especially if you love Barbara Stanwyck like I do! Does anyone know the one I mean?
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
