flip-off scene?

There's a scene with Toodles where he's trying to hitch a ride with a car. When the car passes, he appears to gesture at the car with the bird. I know this movie was pre-code, but that scene still shocked me a bit since it's the first time I've ever seen that in a movie of that era. So, I'm curious to know if it was a different gesture completely or if anyone else caught that too?

As far as I can tell, Toodles did indeed give the car that passed him up the Freeway Salute.

I was fortunate enough to see this movie on the Silver Screen yesterday twice. The first time, I was caught a bit off-guard by this unexpected gesture. But the second time I saw it, I made sure to sit up and take notice.

And sure enough, Toodles flipped off that car.

I'm not sure that The Big Middle Finger was all that rare an occurrence in pre-code films. There's a scene in The Miracle Woman (1931) where one of the characters (a disgruntled driver) gives one of the leads the bird from behind the safety of a closed door.

Unfortunately he used his index finger; you can tell by the shape of the knuckles.
