Try to See the 1958 Susan Strasberg Performance !

If you have seen this movie try to see the 1958 version of the story called "Stage Struck" which has an amazing performance by Susan Strasberg. Unfortunately the Strasberg version is hard to find because it has not been put on VHS or DVD but it appears on TV occasionally. Decide for yourself which has the better, more compelling performance. Personally, I think that Katherine wildly overacts in the 1933 version (the term "chewing the scenery" comes to mind). Part of the problem is the theatrical style of writing and acting expected in 1933, but based on current standards it is hard to keep a straight face. The fact that Katherine won an Oscar for "Morning Glory" says more I think about the caliber of the competition than that of her performance !

The 1933 Oscar should have gone to May Robson for "Lady for a Day" giving a wonderful performance that never grows old. Hepburn was much better as Jo March in "Little Women" released the same year.

I disagree, I think Katharine Hepburn acted to the best of her ability in Morning Glory, and made the material far from trite. She gave it her all and showed America and the Academy her full potential.

I have seen Strasburg and loved it. By 1958 performances in film were film performances, not stage actresses trying to do their craft on film like Hepburn was doing in this movie.
