The producer is such a jerk! I cannot believe he wakes up early after their encounter (Eva, obviously a virgin) and asks buddy Joe to tell her it was a one night stand!
This always bugged me that Joe did exactly as Lewis bid him to do, and break poor Eva's heart by telling her the bad news.
No other way to do it, really... I mean, he was too decent to lead her on. Of course, he could have told her himself, but he was too big a coward for that.
It's interesting how often in these pre-Code films, that the love interest thing either doesn't work out, as here, or isn't even there, as in Stage Door, another movie with Hepburn and Menjou (and Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball and Eve Arden, all wonderful). Not too many years later, they would not have gotten away with it, especially not the explicit one night stand thing. Wow!
There was a hard-headed realism about those pre-code films. Here Menjou isn't punished for being a cad, nor does Hepburn come to a terrible end for being a fallen woman. Life just goes on.
