Midnight Mary 1933

I just saw this movie, which my sister recorded for me, since, unfortunately, I cannot get TCM. Loretta Young is my all-time favorite. She is absolutely gorgeous in this movie. The designers certainly used all their skills to her advantage. This is so dated, showing how very much our entire culture, our mores, our standards, our standards of living, our manners of speech, our ideas of "humor," etc. have changed; but Loretta is timelessly gorgeous. I utterly enjoyed this step into the past.

Please help!!! I just saw this movie on TCM, which I had recorded via DVR and DirecTV. I don't know if TCM or DirecTV was to blame, but the recorded movie ended before the actual end of the movie. I HATE it when that happens! Arrghhh...

Franchot Tone had just appealed to the court for a new trial and that was as far as the recording got. I imagine everything ended well, with Franchot and Loretta Young skipping happily off into precode heaven, but I need to be sure. I am sorry to have missed Franchot's argument before the court - I adore him. I hope you will let me know. Thanks for your time! I loved this movie.

*****SPOILER*****

Franchot Tone tells Judge he has new evidence important to the case. He says she shot gangster to save his life. Explains why he hadn't spoken until then (pride, married, father's reputation). Loretta Young protests and tells the judge she had turned down Tone's offer to help earlier. Tone convinces judge to call for new trial. Judge agrees since he hasn't stated his verdict. Final scenes are newspaper headlines about the surprising change of events, that his wife files for divorce, etc., then the two of them sitting in the court waiting area. Tone tells Young that everything is going to work out, doesn't care how this has tarnished his reputation and that they are going to start anew with each other.

Terrific movie. I saw it last night for the very first time in my life, and I loved it. Loretta Young and Una Merkel are two of my most favorite actresses ever, and it was a great pleasure to see them play together. And I agree that Loretta looks mesmerizing in it.

In the special features section, the movie critic stated Loretta was only 19. Una was pushing 30.
