The piano player

In the scene that begins with Bill (Spencer Tracy) walking the sidewalk on stilts wearing a sandwich board, he stops at a second floor window from which the sound of a woman singing is heard. He leans in to say hello to Fay La Rue (Glenda Farrell). She stops her rehearsal and dismisses her piano accompanist. That pianist was Harry Akst, best know as the composer of popular songs, including Baby Face, Dinah, Am I Blue, Guilty, etc. He was also my grandfather. From time to time I see him in these 30s movies (like Jerry, the rehearsal pianist in 42nd Street) and it is always a kick. He also wrote the title song for The Egg and I. It as been years since I saw A Man's Castle on TV, so I am looking forward to the August 31 cablecast on TCM.

How very cool. I was so excited to learn of the pianist's identity, and the fact that he was the composer of such major period hits like "Baby Face" and "Am I Blue?" I love his music. And he wrote the title number for "The Egg and I" too---one of my very favorite '40s comedies. I sure hope this picture comes out on DVD soon. I teach film history and this would be such a perfect movie to illustrate Pre-Code and Depression attitudes.
