I don't know if anyone will know this, but I'd like to know the title and composer of the German piece the teacher sings and plays for Jo. Thank you!

The composer is Goethe.

The piece is "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt", weis was ich leide.
Only who knows what longing is, can know what I suffer.

The piece is None but the lonely heart, written by Tchaikovsky. The words are by Goethe. The character of Friedrich Bhaer actually tells Jo this in the scene right after he plays it for her.

Also, does anybody know what the opera is that they saw? Was it "Rigoletto"?

The opera is "Lucia di Lammermoor", by Donizetti. The excerpt in the film is the famous sextet " Chi me frena in tal momento ".
