I'm confused by the ending (SPOILER)

As the film draws to a climax, Dave the Dude and his "mob" are all poised to invade Annie's borrowed apartment, posing as her influential friends. Dave-Dude is detained by the police who first refuse to bargain with him, and then call the mayor. The next thing we know -- or that I knew, anyway -- the mayor, governor and other *genuine* highly-placed people appear at Annie's to save the day. Why did the mayor and governor choose to rescue her? Just out of kindness? Or did I miss something?

"I've loved you my whole life."
"You've only known me three days."
"That's when my life began."

reply

I'm not quite sure, either. But yes, I think it was out of kindness.

reply

Yes, that was the miracle, that Dave was able to convince those people at the party for the governor to help Annie. "Do you believe in fairy tales?" That is the whole point.

Damon Runyon, who wrote the story this is based on, wrote many stories like this about the poor people of New York, romanticized but very funny and sweet.

It's also telling that Dave the Dude doesn't try to convince the police of the "fairy tale." He dismisses the notion out of hand: he assumes the police will never buckle and go along with the scheme.

That the politicians are persuadable and willing to participate in the ruse for the good of Annie reminded me of the kind of idealism you see in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
