Roger, Cagney had a funny feeling that his former gang were setting him up to be killed when they bailed him out of jail, so he tipped off the cops there, and they followed the gang in an unmarked car. When the gang realized that Mae Clarke must have tipped him off, after he had taken the wheel, they managed to start shooting at him and forced him off the road. He got Mae out of the car and told her to hide and stay down. The gangsters continued shooting at him from behind their parked car, and Jimmy managed to kill one or two of them. The ringleader, Douglas Dumbrille, kept shooting, until Jimmy told him to drop the gun and put up his hands. The police finally arrived at the same destination, and arrested Dumbrille. Jimmy told the cops to go easy on Mae, because she had basically saved his life. Needless to say, he and Margaret Lindsay reconcile, and there's a happy ending to the film.
