How did the make the weird creature noises?

I remember reading in a movie reference book the techniques used to make the creature noises. Unfortunately, I misplaced this book.

I think the noises were real animal noises slowed down, and played backwards mixed with human speech (also played backwards).

Can anybody confirm or deny this?

How did they make those weird creature noises?

This movie holds up well despite its age. It is still very frightening!!!

Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,S.B.

I read in a book that Sound Man Loren L. Ryder "recorded a mixture of animal sounds and foreign languages, then played them backwards at alternating speeds."

So that's how they made those sounds.

Thank you very much!

They just showed this on the horror movie show three weeks ago and that was the explanation they gave. Still spine chilling after all these years.

The weird animal noises reportedly made audiences nauseous to the point of vomiting when this film was first released in theaters.
