I have to agree that what you see of them in this movie is not very inspirational, but my father told me they had one of the funniest radio shows at the time. Well, what did he know: he missed the War of the Worlds because he was listening to Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy at the time.

They were a popular radio duo in the early 30's -- wikipedia calls them a forerunner of the Bob and Ray type of comedy. If you go to the link below there is a lot of info about them and about Col. Stoopnagle who remained in radio after the two broke up the act in 1937.
