Yes, the film is fairly ridiculous. Yes, West really couldn't sing or act, and looked pretty screwy (literally and otherwise) most of the time.

But that's not the point.

Here was a mildly talented woman, with a sense of business, who was able, in the very male world of movie production, to create a unique character, get enough control over her career, and then manage to write and produce movies that didn't give in to any outside pressures.

That's certainly a good part of the fun in watching her do her shtick.

Watching it now and you are so right. She took what she had and made the most of it in 1933 Hollywood.
