Campy, and very entertaining

I've never seen a Mae West film from start to finish but of course I've heard of her. You'd have to live under a rock not to know who Mae West was!

I really enjoyed this film. Yes, it was over-the-top, and self-indulgent, but I still found it enjoyable to watch. She is so confident at a time when women in film were expected to swoon over a man.

The gowns in this film were great; my favorite scene was when she is singing in front of her black maids and they're providing impromtu back up.

The idea of gorgeous, English, sophisticated Cary Grant falling for a chubby carnival singer is pretty silly, and shows how big West's ego was.

Grant looked about 20 pounds underweight in this movie; he had the body of Barny Fife; was that simply due to his age, or was he sick?

I think what I like best about Mae West is the way the corny dialogue seems so natural to her...plus i Love her mannerisms; the eye rolling, the purring when a man gets close. The way she walked in court; OMG, it was fabulous!

I've heard she was a total witch to work with, and that her sense of self importance only got worse as she got older. One story I remember was that if you visited her, you could not look directly at her or speak to her...everything had to be communicated via her personal assistance (but then again, I've heard the same story about Lucille Ball when she was in her 60's, so who knows if it's just a used-up Hollywood fable.

I'd see this movie again, and I'd give anything to own the gown she wore in the opening number...with the spirals of sequins around each breast; priceless!
