Ruby Keeler

I just thought Ruby Keeler was so cute and adorable!

I don't think I've seen anything cuter than her singing the title song and doing her little tap dance :)

Where the underworld can meet the elite - 42nd Street

yes! I loved seeing her dance, she seemed to be a sweet woman in real life too.
we need a good bio of her (book)

She seemed to have a long and happy life after she divorced Jolson.
I'm glad of that.

You're right; she was just so cute and appealing. I'd like to read a book on her. You have to admire her for refusing to discuss Jolson.
I'll bet she could really have told some stuff on him.

I have to disagree. I love this movie, except for Keeler (ditto on her other Busby Berkeley movies). She's a so-so singer, competent (but graceless0 tapdancer and an incredibly awful actress with zero charisma. The best (though unintentional) joke in the movie is Ginger Rogers (who could be in a coma and still out sing, dance, and act Keeler) turning down a chance for the lead in favor of the more "talented" Keeler.

The late Benny Green compared Keeler's dancing with a drunk trying to kill cockroaches...

Oh, I loved Ruby in this movie! Well, in all her movies. She was just so sweet and cute. You just wanted to be her friend. I thought she had great chemistry with Dick Powell as well. I wanted those two to be a couple in real life, but it never happened.

Her tap dancing did seem odd to me at first - especially compared to a Ginger Rogers or an Ann Miller - but it's grown on me. Besides, she looks like she's having a great time doing it. Rock on, Ruby!

P.S. I'd love to read a book about her as well.

Ruby couldn't act, couldn't sing, couldn't dance without looking at her feet...other than that, she was GREAT!

In 42nd Street, the producer tells her .."You're going out a youngster, but you've GOT to come back a star!!"...I sure hope he wasn't too disappointed!!

"If you can make a girl laugh, you can make her do anything!"

I agree that she looked adorable with Dick Powell but if you look closely, she is actually mouthing some of his dialogue. She played basically the same sweet, naive, young thing in all of her films - very much like she was apparently. I don't think she was a very good actress.
Was her singing voice dubbed? I had heard she was dubbed on occasion since her voice wasn't very good.

reply

She may not have been a great talent, but she's extremely likable and she has screen presence.

I like Ruby Keeler but her tap dancing was nothing to compare to Eleanor Powell or Ann Miller. My wife came up with the same description of it "She's trying to kill bugs."

She was adorable.
I love her.
There's just something about her.

Absolutely adorable! Gorgeous!

Not the greatest dancer? Who cares!

She was one hell of a great tap dancer and anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't seen enough of her work. I've never known a professional dancer who didn't have praise for Keeler and I spend many years in show biz.

For starters, she wasn't doing tap in 42ND STREET - it was buck and wing dancing, a completely different style and performed with shoes with wooden soles. And she was terrific at it.
As for tap, I suggest you folks go to amazon and rent SWEETHEART OF THE CAMPUS or look at some of the clips from COLLEEN and READY, WILLING AND ABLE on youtube before making pre-emptive put-downs.

Yea... a real doll....yum

I'm glad there's this page here of people realizing how wonderful and nice she is. I found Ruby so sweet and pretty, and greatly envy Dick Powell getting to pair off with her in several of these amazing films. I sure don't get that other page full of people badmouthing her.
