How did they film the scenes with the girls on the plane wings

I wonder how they filmed this scene. Was it faked somehow? It seemed like they were "really" flying. They must have used some tricks to achieve that effect. The girl that fell but then landed on the wing of another plane, how did they do that?

I don't know about the falling part (i'd love to know also!) but the scene was filmed in a hangar with wind machines and backdrops

I'll put it to you like this,

Had this been 'real' the man would never have been able to catch that falling woman. She'd have hit him and they both would have gone on through the flimsy canvas covered wing of that bi-plane which would have caused it to crash.

I say that because they made it appear that she fell at least a couple of hundred feet. Also if this had happened in real life the wing they were standing on at the very least would have dipped a few feet from the sudden addition of the weight.

The stunts we saw in this movie that were performed on the wings of airplanes are physically impossible to do in real life. Wing walkers in real life always have things to hang on to.

Real life stunts in planes requires highly skilled pilots. The things that can go wrong are too lengthy to list here.

Parts of the special effects in this movie were excellent but quite honestly most of them made me groan and roll my eyes. That's because I know a LITTLE bit about planes even though I'm not a pilot.

I almost turned the movie off until I read this thread, more specifically your post. This is the third best dancing scene in my opinion. The best was Fred and Ginger learning the Carioca, followed by Fred dancing tap for the police. I know Mr. Astaire is famous for dancing on the ceiling, but when he chose to dance without props he was the best to me.

They were definitely on a soundstage. How could all those girls hang on in heels during takeoff?

Of course it was all nonsense: the girls had no training, had no sense of the wind. And surely they´d freeze to death! No to mention, that the guests wouldn´se much of them from the earth. Well - it´s a musical isn´t it? The whole film is stupid - but there´s Fred and Ginger in it, so it´s worth seeing.
