surprisingly revealing costumes

I was surprised by the costumes of the dancers. They were very low cut and revealing. The dresses were often see through and in that one number their underwear was visible. Bras were visible in another scene, and then in the scene with the girls on the airplanes, some of their blouses were so sheer, you could see their breasts! I was so shocked to see this in a movie from 1933. Did they really like to push the envelope back then?

Before the Hays Code, you had more freedom of expression. Then one man's version took over, which was fine tuned to what you saw in the 50's and early 60's. The system that replaced the Hays Code restored that artistic freedom by requiring age restrictions for theaters, program schedules for TV ( usually racy stuff was on after 9:00 pm). Soaps seemed to excluded by the time requirement but they were on when kids were in school. Then all heck broke out with cable tv and parental controls have been instituted. But the standards of "racy" have changed also, or you wouldn't see Victoria's Secret commercials all day long.

There were a lot of beautiful women in the 1930s. Just look at Ginger, and there were many, many others.
