The Historical Setting for this romance

Full disclosure -- I only watched the first 20 minutes of it and turned it off. I saw it was a 1934 movie, Hitler had come to power in 1933, and I wasn't ready for a Nazi romance with an American girl. I've seen Otto Kruger play the Nazi for example on SABOTEUR by Hitchcock. He's was a great actor, saw him in many films and he had Robert Osborne job on TV hosting movies. I just had seen Myrna Loy on TCM as a Mata Hari and needed a break from German themed films. Now I'm remorseful, seeing the review here on imdb. I hope to see it again and I love that kind of tension, the ambiguous love story, the community harassment...if only I had known the setting was 1909 or thereabouts and would be the Great War.

I miss Big Band music and talented singers. Leonard Cohen is my idol. Civility, harmony, unity!

You weren't watching very carefully during those first 20 minutes, "1909" was on the screen in the first moment after the cast was introduced.

Damn !!! Thanks anyway. I truly love Barbara Stanwyck's films. She had a great TV series (like Loretta Young's series) but somehow I never saw her Big Valley series. Loved Ten Cents a Dance and other 30s, pre-code films. The one with Gable as a gangster punk... TCM is awesome. I'm 78.
