At the time this film was made, there was only a 25 year drought so it didn't seem that fantastic.

Perhaps not so coincidentally, the Cubs and Yankees played each other in the 1932 World Series (or "Serious," if you're Elmer), the year before the film was released.

The Yankees swept the Cubs, but it was Babe Ruth's famous "called shot" in Game 3 that is probably remembered best. Facing the Cubs' Charlie Root in the fifth inning, Ruth allegedly pointed to the stands and declared that he was going to hit one out. Newsreel footage shows Ruth pointing, but whether it was a deliberate declaration has become a hotly contested legend. In any case, Ruth did hit a homer to center field. Adding to the drama is that both teams were jawing at each other throughout the Series, and Ruth's apparent gesture of defiance--and then mocking in his gestures as he rounded the bases--capped that off.

Elmer, the Great was released at the end of April 1933. I don't know when it entered production, or for how long it was in production, but it is likely that if the Yankees had not been written into the original script, it would have been updated during production.
