Saw this on TCM last night and have to say this goes on my list of powerful war movies. Fredric March was perfect in every way so much that Cary Grant could not follow. The scene where Stevens falls out then later he stands up to give a speech on his killing of the German ace were moving. Carole Lombard's short scene was also great. Hopefully TCM will show this again in the future so others who might have missed it can see why Fredric March was an incredible actor.
shareI hope they show the uncut version which would change the meaning of the movie drastically. The censors cut most of Carole Lombard's scenes in the 1939 rerelease including the end of the line "I want to be kind--your place or mine?".
They also chopped off the ending. In the original ending, the camera pans out from the plaque to show Cary Grant's character walk by with a bottle in a paper bag. He has become a hobo and seems to regret what he did.

thats rather curious- i didnt realise the end was cut off. i thought perhaps grants character ended up dying as well cuz i didnt see him get off the plane. thx for the info.
