Has anyone else noticed that every time Carlotta mentions her dog Tarzan, that the word "Tarzan" is dubbed in? At one point her lips are obviously saying something else. Does anyone know what the dogs name was in the script, and why this dubbing was done?
shareYes, I've noticed that too! I always wondered about that myself. The same thing occurs in another Jean Harlow film, "Bombshell"; every time her character refers to her pet goldfish "Fanny". Check it out.

They substituted the name Tarzan because of politics and they said if you look carefully, you can see Carlotta mouth not saying Tarzan, but Mussolini. I like the name Tarzan better. It's funny to name a tiny dog a name like Tarzan, the king of the jungle. LOL

No, in that scene she is referring to herself. After she scolds the dog for messing on the carpet, she softens and apologizes:
"Now aren't you ashamed? For fifteen minutes I walk you around the block so you.. and then you come right in here... Ah-haaa Muzzy's sorry. She doesn't give a darn for the old man's carpet, no..."
I felt like she man-handled the dog when she scolded him for doing its business on the carpet.

I think it was a real dog. And I think the name Muzzy does refer to the dog, a take-off on Mussolini. Earlier in the film, we see her walk three dogs, so keeping the name Muzzy in the film might have been an oversight, or they might have thought that viewers would think Muzzy and Tarzan were two different dogs.

Swapping its name for Tarzan is a clever visual joke: what that little rag / mouse of a dog definitely does not look like, is a lunk like Tarzan!
