Marie Dressler Makes the Movie

She pumps it full of high octane energy. And the end when Harlow remarks that 'she was reading a book the other day', Marie does the most exquisite double take in Hollywood history.

+1 as the kids say nowadays!

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

reply

yes, agreed, brilliant!

also loved the line when her age was referenced, (paraphrasing) "we should discuss the civil war sometime... just the two of us."

reply

Eyeing Elizabeth Patterson (Mrs. Trumball no less!) up and down as if she was the queen was greeted without the other woman wearing gloves!

"Great theater makes you smile. Outstanding theater may make you weep."

reply

I love that line too!!! So funny!

reply

Absolutely--I kept wishing for more of her!

reply

As she does with ALL her films. Brilliant!

Hard to find one 'bad' moment of Marie Dressler on film! Later on, Anne Revere is another character actress that I DARE you to find one minute of her on film where she is not completely mesmerizing.

reply

There are a very few like that. Who seem to do no wrong. Dressler, however, was riveting as a comic actress as well as a dramatic actress -- a very rare combination among actresses and few among actors who could both, like, Lemmon, Tracey, Cagney, a few others.

reply

Yes she did. Her best line was when she told Jean Harolow's character that she didn't have to worry about technology taking over her profession.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

That was a great line!

reply

I love this actress! She was so good in this movie!
