I was expecting a flat-out comedy. . . instead. . .

I found myself watching people in extremely difficult, painful, life-defining situations far beyond the pale of your basic 30's screwball comedy. At the conclusion of the film I was extremely depressed.

***SPOILERS***

The slow demise of John Barrymore's character was difficult to watch. That it ended the way it did was profoundly sad, even devastating. Other situations were presented and treated in an utterly realistic way: infidelity, the realization of a terminal disease, monumental greed, and on and on...

I doubt if I will watch this film again.

Although it was brilliant.
