Harue's plan to raise money

My impression was yes to the first and maybe, maybe not to the second. The first, it seemed she was accepting that she'd submit to something new and terrible rather than her old trade, and the second, when Kihachi showed a lot of fatherly love for his sick son, Harue broke down then later she said no one cares about her and these things made me think that maybe her parents had died - or she'd had a falling out with family - quite recently. Maybe someone Japanese can clarify, reading cultural references that escape me?
