Anna May Wong?

Was Anna May Wong even considered for the part of Mah-Li? I can't see how she would not have been, as she was pretty established in films at this time. I do think she may have been a bit too "hard" looking for the role and perhaps Capra wanted someone who projected a more gentle demeanor, though he may have had other reasons.
Does anyone have more details regarding who else was tested for the part of Mah-Li and why they didn't make it. Thanks.
