Is the erotic dream opium induced?

It appeared to me that Stanwyck is portrayed as unwittingly smoking opium (she is nervous and randomly picks up a cigarette) before falling asleep and having the very preCode erotic dream. This would correlate to General Yen's resort to opium in the final scene (if it is opium). Any thoughts?

Yes, I bet the scene raised eyebrows at the time. I had no idea she was smoking opium.

He did have her drugged initially so I wouldn't be surprise that there were drugs available to her. Being trapped there she would have probably seen it as a welcome escape.

Also, during one of those dreams Gen Yen claimed he had been knocking so hard he could have torn down the door. She never heard it so she must have been deep into a drug trance as opposed to just sleeping.

Hmmm. I never thought about it like that, but you could be right.

The movie is going to be on TCM again on Saturday. Hopefully I'll get a chance to watch it again to get another take. It's always interesting to see if my views change or if I gain some new insights.
