plot hole

What happened to the real Peter Standish. Howard's character is quick to point out that one mustn't interfere nor change the past. Okay, where is the Peter Standish for that time. There should be two then.

reply

Yes, he inhabits the 18th century Standish, so what happens to 18th century Standish when he's being inhabited by 20th century dude?

reply

I was thinking the same think. It's a Hugh plot hole.

reply

It's indicated at the end that the "real" (i.e. 18th century) Peter Standish has traded places with the other, and is floundering around in the 20th century. According to the dialog in the final scene, his modern-day fiancee and friend think he's been behaving strangely, but we never actually see any of this. And when the Peter Standish who spent all those weeks in 1784 returns to 1933, they trade places again. It's not emphasized heavily.

reply

Thanks wmorrow59, I missed that. It would have been interesting if they had made a companion movie where we get to see the experiences of 1784 Standish as he flounders around in 1933.

You've spotted a plot hole in a time travel fantasy film?

I'll alert the media.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.
