stanwyck nails it

if they had cast a "bombshell" actress of the period, this film would not have worked one bit.

She was absolutely perfect in the leading role. What a terrific and talented actress!

" What a terrific and talented actress! " My fave! For my money, during first 25 or so years of her career, nobody compared to her.

Baby Face, The Mad Miss Manton, Ball of Fire, Double Indemnity, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Sorry Wrong Number.....fantastic in all of those!

Christmas in Connecticut, Meet John Doe, Stella Dallas, The Miracle Woman, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, Annie Oakley, Titanic and Remember the Night are also very good. I also kind of like Roustabout. She's also in two films with my favorite actor; Robert Ryan. As far as Baby Face goes, Stanwyck was born to play Lily. I don't think anyone could've played the part better.

reply

Oh yes, I forgot about Titanic.

I seem to recall not being too interested in the two Christmas films. I haven't seen the others you mentioned.

She was also great in a pre-Code film called Night Nurse.

I didn't mention Night Nurse because I wasn't sure if you'd be familiar with it. Great film. There was nobody cuter than Joan Blondell in the 30s. I drool seeing Barbara and Joan onscreen at the same time. They worked together in another film earlier that year; Illicit. By the way, I have all of the Stanwyck films we've discussed in my collection. One can never have too many Barbara Stanwyck or Robert Ryan films in one's collection.

By the way, I'm not too familiar with Jim Hutton's work, but I've always been fond of Timothy's work. Very underrated actor.

Robert Ryan was a top-notch actor. I especially love him in the early fifties film On Dangerous Ground. Boy did he show his acting ability in that movie! VERY highly recommended if you haven't seen it!

She did indeed. She may not be a bombshell, but she always pulls off looking pretty darn good. Personality and attitude go along ways when it comes to being attractive. IMO.

This movie was a revelation to me--that audiences in the 1930s were ready for that kind of realism about women, men, sex, and power. It was terrific.

Major flaw of this movie: Pat, forced, happy ending to an otherwise tough, honest film -- gotta leave 'em happy and not rock the boat -- Stanwyck finally capitulates to the male. Otherwise, I couldn't take my eyes off Barbara (they padded her ass, btw).

I felt conflicted about this. I would not have felt satisfied if she had simply sailed off to "exploit" another man, but I did not believe that she suddenly realized she loved Trentholt, nor that she was ready to give up the satchel of riches. It was a forced ending, for sure. Is the original script available?

I didn't know about the padded ass. She looks so slim throughout.

You think? I don't know...even though she was slim, she did have a pretty shapely behind. I've seen a picture of her from The Lady Eve where she is all ass.

Sweet merciful crap!

It's just tea! *sips* Needs more gin.

For more recommendations, you might want to start a thread on the CFB. There are some die-hard Stanwyck fans on that board.

Enjoy! Can't go wrong with Stanwyck.

If you see those films, I hope that you'll review them. I'm curious to know what you think of them.
