Victor's Family

Which one of Victor's family was the most likable? Poor Stella hardly had a chance, even from the first!

Well, Pop (Henry Travers) is a sweetheart, but he's a one-dimensional character: the patient, cheerful husband of a shrewish wife. But my vote goes to Helen (Margaret Hamilton), the maiden aunt. She is the most well-rounded member of the family (not counting the leads, of course). Her reactions are not always predictable, she seems a good deal smarter than the rest, and she (along with Pop) understands, and ignores, Mother Hallam's manipulations.

I also liked Helen. She does see through Mother Hallam's antics, and I think, as you said she tries to keep things on the even keel. I liked how she listened to Vicky's diatribe about he & Stella at the end, and her reply of, "Well, I wouldn't go getting divorced over it." Very good come-back!

However, she can be a bit catty--as in the scene on Tuesday night at the Hallam's house when they're discussing the newest cake, and Stella's operation.

Pop was by far the most welcoming.
