Relationship between Stella + Jerry

Do you think the relationship between Stella & her nephew Jerry was 100% innocent? I can never decide. I always think it is...until the big blow up when everybody walks out on her, and Jerry declares his love for her. What do you all think?

reply

Based on the 60 minute radio version of Another Language heard on Lux Radio Theater I would say yes, the relationship was 100% innocent. Haven't seen the movie yet, but the radio play starring Bette Davis and much of the original cast was excellent!

I think the script deliberately leaves it up in the air, although the way Hayes plays it, one is hard put to think of Stell committing adultery. Jerry most likely would do it, given half a chance. I'd love to see how it was done on the stage.

reply

Seeing it on the stage would have been good, I agree. And I also agree that the script deliberately leaves it up to the interpretion of the viewer, as to the nature of the relationship between Stella & Jerry.

I do think, however, feeling as stomped on my Vicky's family as she did, that Stella might have considered a brief one night fling with Jerry, in the heat of the moment. Jerry seemed to understand her in a way Vicky never could. I'd like to think she didn't, but remember...it was pre-Code Hollywood!

Stella, Jerry, & Vic should have just told everyone to butt out & mind their own business. Just because the nosy family asks questions, it doesnt mean they have to answer them... Vic needs to grow a pair.

reply

Agreed. When he married, his loyalty should have been more towards his wife, and less towards his family.
