Yes but in a small way. White Zombie'leader Rob Zombie is a HUGE horror movie fan, it is one of his favorite movies, that's all.

OK SORRY...my mistake By the way i DO like Slayer (not Venom or Pink Floyd) but SOME White Zombie songs ARE heavy-metal like I Zombie & Electric Head Pt. 1

That is, in my opinion...and, yes some of their songs are techno-rock like Grease Paint and Monkey Brains so it seems that they are a little bit of both.

Two, Pink Floyd is acid rock.

Actually...Pink Floyd in their early years were indeed part of the "acid rock" movement. None of the late 70s, 80s, nor 90s Floyd was acid rock of course. Do a search for Pink Floyd and acid rock- touch up on your Pink Floyd history.

Pink Floyd is awesome. So are the doors and the beatles. I don't like metal.

Venom were a heavy metal band that established a lot of the defining characteristics of early black metal bands. They don't really have anything in common with what the scene developed into, however. If you listen to early Bathory albums, you can easily see the development from Venom-style metal to traditional black metal in the vein of Darkthrone and the likes.

reply

Venom is New Wave of British Heavy Metal. They had satanic lyrics but the music wasn't different from other bands like Motorhead for example. Black Metal only started with Hellhammer, Sodom and Bathory. And later reappeared in the late 80's early 90's in Norway in bands like Mayhem, Thorns and Darkthrone.

reply

White zombie is best described as sleaze\thrash metal or power groove if u use Phil Anselmo`s vocabulary. Megadeth, slayer and venom are thrash metal. White zombie is a extremly original band and a fresh breath in the world of metal. And there is nothing called tech rock.

whats with all this music labeling? It's retarded. "pink floyd is acid rock" lol what about PROG ROCK? classic rock? or just rock? labels are constantly made up and slapped to everything and its f*cking annoying.

reply

Music labeling is really dumb. Nobody really cares what it is, people just want to listen. Also, if anyone is interested in checking out bands that sample alot of old horror movie sounds, you should check out the ELECTRIC HELLFIRE CLUB. They are a better band than the majority of the ones mentioned in this thread and are campy and fun like white zombie.

If you want truly tasteful sampling you need only speak two words: Skinny Puppy. Don't get me wrong, Rob Zombie understands the intracies of sampling as well -- one only need listen to La Sexorcisto to recognize that. However, in the end, the Puppies created the use of effective pop-culture sampling.

As for all the genre bickering, breaking things down any further than: blues, jazz, rock, pop, metal, opera, electronic, world, symphonic composition and chamber seems an incredibly pointless waste of time. But that is just my opinion.

Finally, Pink Floyd always was/is/will be Rock 'n Roll. Argue the point as much as you like, but the definitive word(s) come from the mouth of Roger Waters and David Gilmour themselves. Check out Live at Pompeii and you'll hear both Waters and Gilmour refer to themselves as rock musicians and their music as rock'n'roll -- and this is while they were still emersing themselves in full psychedelic glory (a la Echoes, Embryo, A Saucerfull of Secrets, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, etc...). Can't argue with the composer, you'll always be wrong. =)

If Venom isn't "Black Metal", why at the end of their song 'Manitou' do they proclaim "....We are Venom, the Black Metal Gods, V-E-N-O-f_ing-M ? Hm ? Oh, and if you want one of Zombie's more thrashing songs, try 'Thunderkiss '65 '
I think you'll find it agreeable.

umm Venom may have invented the term but they are NOT black metal by any means of the word. they are NOT true!. Wanna hear some TRUE stuff? listen to Satyricon's old stuff or Ulver's: Nattens Madrigal. Or Burzum's old Stuff before he got into the neonazi Neo-folk stuff(which is IMHO even better)

Venom is definately not black metal. Black metal is best heard in band such as Mayhem, Burzum, and Emperor.

Venom did, however, just invent the term "Black Metal" and the basic concept of it, but their music style does not fit in a black metal category. Also, they were not true satanists by any means. They have admitted quite a few times that it was just for theatrics and such.

White Zombie thrash? Hardly. Testament is a great thrash band, though. So check them out.

reply

Well White Zombie is actualy heavy metal disco just to correct.

reply

White Zombie (between their two albums, "Astro-Creep: 2000" and "La Sexorcisto") are two very different bands in the sense of sound. Their old, OLD indie stuff was very thrash/trash metal. Circa-"La Sexorcisto", they were more heavy metal than anything. But around the time of "Astro-Creep: 2000" they created a brand new sound, mixing heavy metal, techno, electronica, groove, funk and, most importantly, disco.

So, if I may be so bold, I'll say that, in my great-ass opinion, White Zombie holds no genre. I'd actually dare to say that their later stuff is more akin to something I'd like to call "techno disco metal".

If you want to hear a cool transformation of the White Zombie sound, download these songs in this order:

"Tales of the Scarecrow" - Sounds EXACTLY like an Alice Cooper song (hard rock).
"Disaster Blaster 2" - This is before La Sexorcisto, but they're on the track of thrash metal.
"Welcome To Planet *beep* / Pyshcoholic Slag" - Heavy metal with hard rock elements.
"Grease Pain and Monkey Brains" - Electronic, Metal and Disco can be heard here.
"More Human Than Human" - Electronica, Metal and Groove.
"Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks & Cannibal Girls" - Electronica, Groove, Disco with metal roots.

I mean, you can't deny Rob Zombie isn't influenced by disco. Who would he have covered a K.C. & The Sunshine Gang song which, might I add, fits in with the sound of his other songs (post Astro-Creep: 2000). Zombie has said that everything he has done is influenced by the '70s. Whether it be Alice Coooper or K.C. & The Sunshine Gang.

On a side note, I hate 99% of metal. White Zombie is a saving grace and a breath of fresh air.

Another thing most people don't know is that the song "More Human Than Human" is a direct reference to the sci-fi movie "Blade Runner". The slogan of the company that makes the replicant androids is "More human than human." And some of the lyrics to the song is dialogue in the movie.

Brax0r was the only guy who really showed he has a clue about White Zombie here so far. It's very hard to label them in a sub-genre because they changed so much from project to project. I partially agree with the guy who thinks it's dumb to label types of music into genres. For a band like White Zombie, it is.
The same goes for a lot of other bands who don't try and define themselves and just do whatever suits them, or sadly in a lot of cases, what's popular.

My favorite Zombie album was La Sexorcisto: Devil Music vol. 1. I don't think I could ever get tired of listening to it. The movie was quite an eerie classic too, though the creepiest old horror movie will always be Nosferatu for me. That Max Schreck guy was just so hideous.

Rob Zombie did say in an interview it was a great movie and he named the band after it because it was such a good flick. I have yet to see white zombie. I can't find it to rent on DVD anywhere.

TCM or AMC showed it on Halloween. Maybe they'll show it again. Netflix also has it for rental.

I know this thread is old but just to correct everybody....labels will always be just that.....labels, let the art speak for itself...what does it matter if its metal, rock, thrash, black metal etc....just stop and enjoy it for what it is, pure headbanger friendly homegrown rock and roll!! And last time I checked this was a thread for a film not a discussion for the labeling and divisions of rock and metal

White Zombie originally began as a noise rock/heavy metal band. All of their albums other than their first are purely heavy metal.
