I definitely recommend reading "Carmilla" in any format. Even though the story has next to nothing to do with Dreyer's film, it is an outstanding work in its own right.

By reading the tale for yourselves, you'll also see just how wrong that pretentious Russian idiot-reviewer is when she writes that "whatever the meaning(s) of this quite extraordinary and beautiful film, you can bet the le Fanu novel isn't a patch on it." What you can bet is that that anyone who writes such drivel hasn't read Le Fanu!

I hate to sound like a troll but I have put together a nice anthology of early vampire literature. It contains 18 stories and two appendices, and two vampire stories are by Le Fanu (one is Carmilla).

It is on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/The-Blood-Life-Anthology-ebook/dp/B00DEVFHWI) and Barnes & Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-blood-is-the-life-osie-turner/1115 667090).
