Is this very good?

Could anyone tell me if this is worth seeing? I've read in some articles that it has surrealistic qualities to it and if it is at all similar to Un Chien Andalou or Jean Cocteau's work then I'll probably like it. Nosferatu I found to be really boring so I'm reluctant to check it out.

You found Nosferatu 'really boring'? Don't bother watching any horror film ever again then! :-) Have you tried the new fully restored Nosferatu with original soundtrack (DVD - Kino in America, Masters of Cinema in UK)? It's stunning.

Vampyr has a meandering, hypnotic pace, quite eerie imagery. I guess some of the scenes could be compared to Cocteau (eg. the scene in La Belle et La Bete when Belle's father first arrives at the castle, or the otherworldly tunnel scene in Orphee)...

I love Cocteau and also Vampyr. If that helps.

I just watched Vampyr, if you are considering seeing it take my advice and dont waste your time. The story is absurd. There isnt a single developed character and for a 73 minute film it felt like an eternity. There were some interesting cinematic techniques for its time but they do not make up Vampyr's flaws. If you think this film is good then . . . like, seriously?

The movie was more about the great visuals, not developed characters. Not every movie needs that.

Yes, it's very, very good. If you enjoy Cocteau, it's hard to imagine not liking this. It's also quite similar to Eraserhead in that it depicts a man who seems to be wandering through a dream. It's probably more engaging than Nosferatu in that the viewer walks with the "hero," discovering things and piecing together what's going on as he does.

Give Nosferatu another chance, though. I recommend the recent Kino two-disk edition.

I have a hard time comparing vampyr to cocteau and bunuel. they were surrealists, Well, in general their early stuff is, like andalusian dog and the first orpheus film. someone will correct me I am sure. I don't think dreyer with this film is surrealist at all. I did really like the inventive special effects. the shadows characters are awesome. I was really impressed. I like silent films for the most part. If you like silent films, then you really should see this. If not, try something else. no need wasting your time on movies you don't like. there are so many great ones to choose from.

This movie is downright creepy! It is excellent.

Oh my gosh yes~! I just saw parts of it after Ghost Adventures, my younger sister has to go to school. (It was last night) It was very late and both of us were tired. Though she was scared so I told just leave the TV on for a little while. I came back to check on her she's like "this is scary". I couldn't help but want to watch it too. It's creepy and amusing. Great Horror classic.

You're not my own critic!

Yes VERY creepy! I loved the special effects and I couldn't stop watching it. Director was awesome for back in this day!

So you already have had positive affirmation before asking this board? Great.
I don't think "Vampyr" is like the film you mentioned nor really in line with Cocteau. Dreyer is certainly very experimental with "Vampyr" but the avant-gard he explores is much more of the "Warning Shadows"-type Impressionist school. In my view, "Vampyr" is a classic.

Is this worth seeing? I won't say no but in the context of Dreyer, it is the weakest of the 4 of his films I have seen. If you see one, see The Passion of Joan of Arc. It's his masterpiece.

If you thought Nosferatu was boring, this will put you into a coma!

I think IMDB poster peteykins666 is closest to the target...
This film isn't for everyone... But if your head's in the right space... (A love or understanding of Avant-garde film making also helps.)
It IS very Eraserhead-like... Both films have the same pacing, more or less.

Now I liked the movie... Because it's weird. But I would tell everyone... Before you watch Vampyr, make sure you take a good, strong healthy nap beforehand.
This film IS very dreamlike, and very relaxing to watch. There are no kick ass chase scenes or scary monsters... The whole movie is understated... Sublime. It works on giving you subtle chills then to horrify you.

Now, this film is one of the "101 Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die" book. Now THAT, I don't necessarily agree with. It's a strange trip of a movie, but I'm not too sure I'd have it up there with Frankenstein & Dracula.

My, you're nosey, aren't you?

To be honest I thought the film was alright.

It's still the best vampire movie I've ever seen.
