Murder is condoned...

I watched Unashamed a second time today, having seen it a number of years ago, also on TCM.
I was astonished at the script's blatant "approval" of murder and of the acquittal of the murderer, as long as the murder is "justified".
I was also astonished that it was okay to portray Twelvetrees as a despicable soiled woman who gets no better than she deserves for openly having an affair with "a man" AND that it's okay for her brother to murder that same man and get away with it, as long as Twelvetrees publicly acknowledges her scandalous relationship without benefit of marriage and takes a moral licking from those in the court room.
So many double standards here. I've watched dozens of pre-Code films and these hazy standards can't all be chalked up to the pre-Code era alone. Some pretty dodgy writing here by any standards!
And all this from the studio headed by puritanical Louis B. Mayer!

I thought the same thing. Not only does the guy get away with murder, but everyone in the family has no problem lying under oath, and the lawyer not only allows, but encourages the perjury.

Yeah, that really stood out to me too, even taking into consideration that it was "a different time", and that people had a different idea of "morals" than we do today.

Sure, Harry was a sleaze. But, Dick outright murdered him, and then so blatantly lied in the courtroom totally fabricating how it went down; head just got back from the shooting range and was showing Harry the gun when it accidentally went off.

And then there's the family's sleazebag lawyer; he's describing in very vivid details how her brother is going to die in the electric chair unless she changes her story. He's convincing her that if her brother fries, it's going to be all on her. If the family name is going to be sullied it will have to be sullied by her, for being a "loose woman", not by her brother, who seems to need anger management, and murdered her sleazy boyfriend. Dick needs to be spared not only death but a tarnished name as well, as he's gonna be taking over Daddy's business one day.

One word that came to mind while watching this was Affluenza.
