Anybody speak Japanese?

I read a write-up of this film that said the brothers reached a certain state of mind at the end. The writer used a Japanese word for which there is no direct English translation, but described it as "a sad, quiet acceptance of the way things are". If you know anything about Japanese culture, it should come as no surprise that they have their own word for this. Still, I want to use this word in conversation and it's killing me that I can't remember it! Does anybody know it?
