Coming to DVD in April as part of Criterion's Eclipse series, as well as Passing Fancy and Tokyo Chorus.

I first tried to track this down around 18 months ago as it was on the imdb list of top 50 films of the 30's at that time. I was unable to do so but managed to find a copy on the Net albeit with embedded Spanish subtitles. I finally got around to watching it today. Despite a dubious english subtitle file, my enjoyment was not spoiled one iota. A humorous film.

I own this collection and it's quite marvellous really.
This picture is an absolute diamond!

Yes it's on DVD by Criterion's Eclipse series and actually is much better than the old VHS tape that was floating around. The picture is nice and sharp and clean. You get two more Ozu films in the box set. Highly recommended! Get it before it goes OOP.

I just missed it. TCM has showed TOKYO CHORUS last week and will be airing PASSING FANCY next week. I hope they show this one again so I can watch it.

It was a great movie.

better than I hoped too. It's tricky hearing how great a movie is ahead of time and then seeing it. Sometimes it takes multiple viewings to find the greatness and sometimes it just doesn't work for you. But this one was great to watch. One question mark about the movie is the running time. It seemed to be 10 minutes short according to it's Criterion Collection and IMDB running times. TCM had it listed right at 90 minutes.

Yes. That movie has a lightheartedness, and timeless joy about it, that really works. It's nice that we can see a classic Japanese film "comedy" as opposed to the generally darker Samurai or war menu, that we're more used to being served here in the US.
